Grimspound Border Morris has introduced a new logo to celebrate its 30th anniversary this year.

The logo is being launched as the Newton Abbot-based dance group hosts the Bovey Tracey Green Man Festival tomorrow (April 26).

Designed by Grimspound dancer, artist and teacher Sam McCarthy-Patmore, the new logo reflects the evolving culture and demography of the group.

‘The design elements of golden hare, black bear and ivy leaves each have their own significance,’ Sam explained.

The hare reflects the growing number of women in the side, the bear reflects the aggressive stick banging in Morris dancing and is a nod to the male members of the side. Meanwhile ivy is often used to decorate the dancers’ hats and represents loyalty and longevity.

As with the dance side’s costumes, the logo colours of black with a touch of purple are reminiscent of the black rocks of the moor and the purple of the heather.
